Society for the Promotion of Himalayan Indigenous Activities (SOPHIA)
Dehradun NGO securing forest rights and livelihoods for the nomadic Van Gujjar community since 1996
Society for the Promotion of Himalayan Indigenous Activities (SOPHIA) is a Dehradun-based NGO founded in 1996 by social activists, indigenous people and Van Gujjars. It works across the Himalayan states of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh with the Van Gujjars, a nomadic buffalo-herding community facing loss of forest rights, unrecognised domicile rights and poverty. SOPHIA takes a rights-based approach, running projects on securing rights under the Forest Rights Act, domicile rights, milk marketing for pastoralist livelihoods, and health services for nomadic women, while also working with settled village communities that share the same forests.
