Seva Kendra Calcutta, established in 1973 out of the Catholic charities' response to the 1971 refugee crisis, is the social service society of the Archdiocese of Calcutta serving all communities. Over five decades it has run slum development, education and skill training, women's empowerment, health outreach and major disaster responses — from the 2000 floods to Cyclone Aila — across Kolkata and southern West Bengal.
