United Artists' Association was formed in 1964 by a group of like-minded youth in Ganjam to help people affected by natural calamities and to start local educational institutions, and has since grown into a community-empowerment organisation supporting grassroots people's groups, NGOs and community-based organisations along Odisha's coast. Its programmes span tank management and irrigation, environmental sanitation, fisheries development and seaweed farming, organic agriculture promotion, and climate-change adaptation for women and children in vulnerable coastal households. UAA also helped incubate Samudram, a state-level federation of women fish-workers, and led relief operations after cyclones including Phailin in 2013, when it supported thousands of affected households with food, shelter, water and sanitation.
