Transform Rural India Foundation (TRI) was set up as a Tata Trusts initiative to drive coordinated, village-level poverty reduction in some of India's most persistently poor districts, working closely with longtime rural-livelihoods partner PRADAN. Rather than running a single-sector program, TRI organises its work around what it calls 'Thoughtful Tarakki' across six linked dimensions — health and nutrition, primary education, income and livelihoods, water and sanitation, local governance, and gender equality — on the premise that villages need progress on several fronts simultaneously to escape poverty traps. TRI works through Gram Panchayats (elected village councils) and community institutions rather than parallel structures, aiming for changes that survive after its own teams move on. Its geographic focus has centred on Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and other high-poverty states.
