People's Action for Social Service was established in 1987 in Tirupati, Chittoor district, to work in what was then a drought-affected part of southern Andhra Pradesh, and is registered to receive foreign contributions. It works for the economic, educational, psychological and health-related empowerment of disadvantaged and vulnerable groups, running old-age homes for the elderly and welfare programmes for the poor and destitute. In 2000, PASS opened a special school in Tirupati for children with intellectual disabilities, and it continues to run welfare, rehabilitation and training programmes for disadvantaged women and children across Chittoor district.
