Radha S Murthy is the founder of Nightingales Medical Trust[1], an Indian non-profit working on elderly and healthcare from Bengaluru.
Radha S. Murthy is an Indian physician and the co-founder and managing trustee of the Nightingales Medical Trust, a Bangalore-based charity working in elder care, active ageing and dementia care.
She founded the trust in 1998 with S. Premkumar Raja, and has been its managing trustee since. She is also president of the Dementia India Alliance, a family carer-centred organisation launched by the trust in 2023.
Early life and education
Murthy took her MBBS at St John's Medical College, Bangalore, and has more than thirty years of clinical experience.
Career
In the mid-1990s Murthy's husband fell critically ill and needed constant medical attention. She has said that although she knew many doctors, finding the right one at the moment of need proved difficult. The experience led her to set up Nightingales Home Health Services in 1996 to provide routine and emergency medical care in patients' homes.
In 1998 she and S. Premkumar Raja founded the Nightingales Medical Trust, beginning in a garage in Sadashivnagar, Bangalore. The trust works on dementia and respite care, with residential and day-care facilities, as well as elder healthcare, active ageing and elders' enrichment programmes. Its founders' premise was that if facilities could be created to meet the physical, emotional, financial and social needs of older people, they could age with dignity.
In 2023 the trust launched the Dementia India Alliance, headquartered in Bangalore, to broaden dementia awareness across India; Murthy became its president.
