Satya Special School began in Puducherry in 2003 as a day-care centre for children with special needs, started by a group who had learned of the widespread neglect faced by these children and the isolation of their mothers. It has since grown into early intervention, functional and academic education, village and community rehabilitation centres, satellite centres, a mobile unit reaching Puducherry and Tamil Nadu, livelihoods, training and disability rights advocacy — built around its philosophy of mothers as co-therapists.
