Created in 1977 as an independent public charitable trust, ITC Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata is a modern gurukul that revived the guru-shishya parampara of Hindustani classical music through fully supported residential scholarships under resident master-musicians. Never taking government money, it has trained generations of leading vocalists and instrumentalists, and its annual ITC Sangeet Sammelan — begun in Delhi in 1971 — remains one of India's premier classical music festivals.
