CARD was founded in Pudukkottai district, Tamil Nadu on 7 October 1982 by P. Vedachalam, S. R. Jaya and friends, and registered that December. From its Samathuvapuram headquarters it provides after-school support for rural children, promotes livelihoods for women and marginal farmers, runs health, nutrition, drinking water and sanitation programmes, works on forest and mangrove conservation, and operates the Annadhanam feeding project, with additional work in Maharashtra.
