Kala-Azar Medical Research Centre (KAMRC)

The Kala-Azar Medical Research Centre in Muzaffarpur is a unit of the Sitaram Memorial Trust, directed by Prof. Dr. Shyam Sundar of Banaras Hindu University, and is dedicated to the elimination of kala-azar (visceral leishmaniasis) and skin kala-azar. It provides free treatment, medicine, medical check-ups and hospitalisation to patients from Bihar's endemic districts. The centre developed the rK39 rapid diagnostic strip test now used internationally to detect the disease, and hosts visiting delegations including WHO officials studying its community treatment model.

• More than 20 thousand kala-azar and skin kala-azar patients have availed free treatment at the centre
