Badruddin Ajmal

Badruddin Ajmal is an Assam perfume manufacturer, Islamic scholar and politician who has built one of the largest networks of charitable education and health institutions in the state through the Ajmal Foundation.

His family business grew from his father Haji Ajmal Ali, a rice farmer who moved to Mumbai in 1950 to work with oud, and whose perfume brand later became substantial in West Asia. Ajmal took master's degrees in theology and Arabic from Darul Uloom Deoband and has directed its Shaikhul Hind Academy since 1995. He is president of the Assam unit of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, and was Member of Parliament for Dhubri from 2009 to 2024.

His charitable work began with the Haji Abdul Majid Memorial Public Trust in Hojai, of which he is managing trustee, and which runs the Haji Abdul Majid Memorial Hospital and Research Centre; he later established a second hospital at Malua near Badarpur in Karimganj district. In 2005 he set up the Ajmal Foundation, registered as a public charitable trust and based in Hojai, which operates some 25 educational institutions across Assam. Its education work runs from schools and colleges to a talent search examination, a scholarship programme and free coaching for the civil services examinations, with a particular emphasis on the education of girls in a region with low female literacy. On the health side it funds cataract surgery, dialysis and cancer care, and it also runs skills and livelihood training, housing and drinking water schemes, support for disabled people and flood relief, a recurring need in Assam.[2][3]
