Rajan Choudhary is the founder of Shikshit Rojgar Kendra Prabandhak Samiti (SRKPS) (1987)[1], an Indian non-profit working on women & children, healthcare, livelihood and education from Jhunjhunu.

Rajan Choudhary is an Indian journalist and social activist from Jhunjhunu district, Rajasthan, and a founding member and secretary of Shikshit Rojgar Kendra Prabandhak Samiti (SRKPS), a non-governmental organisation working on the rights of women, children and young people in Rajasthan.

He is best known for using undercover decoy operations to expose clinics carrying out illegal prenatal sex determination and sex-selective abortion, work for which he has been called the friend of the unborn.

Early life

Choudhary was born in 1964 in Hanumanpura village in Jhunjhunu district, Rajasthan. He is a postgraduate and has worked for some three decades in journalism alongside his social work, which he entered in 1988.

Career

SRKPS was started in 1987 and works across 33 districts of Rajasthan on women's rights, child protection, health, education and livelihoods. Its programmes include tobacco control, HIV/AIDS prevention, maternal and child health, mental health and scholarships for disadvantaged children.

Choudhary's best-known work has been against sex-selective abortion. For around two decades SRKPS ran decoy operations in which volunteers posed as patients seeking a sex determination test, with hidden cameras recording the transaction; charges followed when money changed hands. He has said that one doctor offered him a bribe of fifty lakh rupees to stop.

The work led the Government of Rajasthan to establish what has been described as India's first dedicated bureau against female foeticide, staffed by forty officers under the National Health Mission. Rajasthan's child sex ratio rose from 888 girls per 1,000 boys in the 2011 census to 946 in 2017-18.[2][3][4]

Shikshit Rojgar Kendra Prabandhak Samiti (SRKPS) started its social journey in 1987 and is based in Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan. It works on the belief that progress begins when communities become self-reliant, and now supports communities in 33 districts of Rajasthan. Its programmes include Let Girls Be Born, Childline 1098, HIV/AIDS targeted intervention, Safer Cities and model schools.
