Lekhadeep was set up in 1993 by parents of mentally challenged children working in the Accountant General's office in Hyderabad, and grew into a community-run special school and rehabilitation centre. It runs a special school for children up to 18, a vocational training centre, a sheltered workshop and a group residential home, serving families across the twin cities and Ranga Reddy district. The Telangana government named it the state's best institution for empowerment of persons with disabilities in 2022.
