Founded on 6 July 1917 in memory of pioneering Orientalist R. G. Bhandarkar, the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute in Pune is one of India's foremost centres of Indology. It safeguards a vast library of rare books and manuscripts, produced the landmark Critical Edition of the Mahabharata, runs conservation and Prakrit-Sanskrit study programmes, publishes the Annals of the BORI, and now offers popular courses on Indian knowledge systems to students and the public.
