Bakdil traces its origins to 1971, when the Diocese of Tura's relief work for refugees of the Bangladesh war grew into the Garo Hills' leading social organisation, registered as a non-profit in 1987. Working across 22 blocks of Meghalaya with close to 20,000 farming families, it runs five primary health centres — including India's first solar-powered PHC at Nengkhra — promotes self-help groups and bank linkages, supports early childhood development in partnership with the state government, and drives clean energy, disaster management and women's empowerment programs.
