Atma Swabhiman was established in 2009 by and for people affected by leprosy, growing out of founder Shailendra Shaw's colony-development collections of one rupee per family per day that began in 2004. Working in leprosy colonies around Dhanbad, Jharkhand, it focuses on leprosy care and health, children's education, employment opportunities and community development, pushing back against the stigma that keeps colony residents in poverty.
