Sheila Devaraj is the founder of Association for Promoting Social Action (APSA)[1], an Indian non-profit working on orphans & child care and education from Bengaluru.

Sheila Devaraj is an Indian child rights worker and a director of the Association for Promoting Social Action (APSA), a Bangalore-based organisation working with the urban poor and with children in distress in Bangalore and Hyderabad.

She has been associated with APSA since its early years and sits on its managing council. She was a member of the first Child Welfare Committee constituted in Bangalore under India's juvenile justice legislation.

Career

APSA was founded in 1981 and works on child protection, education and community development among the urban poor. Devaraj is a director of the organisation and serves as treasurer, and has been involved in its work on the rights of children since its formative period.

APSA's programmes include the Dream School, or Kanasina Shaale, a bridge school for former child labourers aged roughly ten to fourteen, day care and nutrition for younger children from low-income households, and Childline, the helpline for children in distress.[2][3]

APSA is a rights-based, child-centred organisation founded in 1981 that runs residential shelters, open shelters and community programmes for street children, orphans and children escaping exploitation across Bangalore and Hyderabad, including its long-running Nammane open shelter under the Juvenile Justice Act.
