Bidyut Mohanty is the founder of Society for Promoting Rural Education and Development (SPREAD) (1989)[1], an Indian non-profit working on tribal welfare, hunger and education from Koraput.

Society for Promoting Rural Education and Development (SPREAD)

SPREAD is a voluntary society registered in September 1989 that works with tribal, Dalit and other marginalised communities in Koraput district and the wider KBK region of Odisha. Its programmes cover nutrition, food security, livelihood security, right to education, land rights and governance, delivered through village-level people's organisations. The organisation is known for community-led social audits of government welfare schemes such as ICDS, PDS, MGNREGA and the Mid-Day Meal scheme.

SPREAD’s operational area covers 1381 villages of 60 Gram Panchayats in 4 blocks of Lamtaput, Boipariguda, Dasamantpur & Nandapur.
SPREAD initiated the community monitoring of 49300 PDS cards for 813 villages & as a result many issues like non distribution cases identified and same case was addressed by the community members.
11259 families demanded for work and got to work for 9, 23,238 days under MGNREGA.
