Conceptualised in 2004 as a philanthropic initiative for eastern and north-eastern India and inaugurated on 16 May 2011 on land donated by Ratan Tata at New Town, Tata Medical Center is a comprehensive cancer hospital governed by the charitable Tata Medical Center Trust. Around three-quarters of its 431 beds are reserved for general-category patients treated at cost rate, and its campus pairs the hospital with the Tata Translational Cancer Research Centre and Premashraya, a housing facility for outstation patients and their families.
