Sphere India was formed in 2003 as India's national coalition for humanitarian and disaster-response coordination, bringing UN agencies, government disaster-management bodies, international and national NGOs, corporate CSR programs and academic institutions onto one platform. Rather than running relief operations itself, Sphere India's role is to promote common humanitarian standards, rights-based response principles and coordinated action so that during a disaster, member organisations don't duplicate effort or leave gaps. It organises state-level Inter-Agency Groups (IAGs) to coordinate local responders, and maintains a network of community disaster-response volunteers. The coalition has played a coordinating role in major Indian disaster responses over the past two decades, from cyclones to floods to the COVID-19 relief effort.
