SOFOSH was established in 1964 to supplement the work of Pune's Sassoon General Hospitals through a range of patient welfare services. In 1973 it set up Shreevatsa, a child care centre offering shelter, education and medical support to family-deprived children, with an established adoption programme to help place them with families. It also runs Tara, the SOFOSH Dhadphale Centre, a home for family-deprived children with mental and physical disabilities.
