Ranga Shankara was founded in 2004 in Bengaluru's JP Nagar by actor Arundhati Nag, run by the Sanket Trust that she and her late husband, actor-director Shankar Nag, had set up in 1992, and named in his memory. It is a full-time, professionally run theatre with a roughly 300-seat auditorium built for serious acoustics and lighting rather than as a multi-purpose hall, and it programs performances almost every night of the year — a rarity for Indian theatre venues, most of which sit empty outside occasional bookings. Beyond hosting shows from across India and abroad, Ranga Shankara commissions new work, runs a well-known annual theatre festival, and conducts outreach and training programmes aimed at building the next generation of theatre practitioners and audiences.
