Ashagram Trust was founded on 13 July 1983 in Barwani by Harsh Mander, then serving as the local Sub-Divisional Magistrate, after he encountered the severe neglect faced by leprosy patients in the district. The trust built roughly sixty cottages to house leprosy-cured families and set them up with sustainable livelihoods in farming, carpet-making and other trades, moving people away from begging and social exclusion toward self-sufficiency. It expanded into disability services in 1989, manufacturing calipers and artificial limbs, and in 1998 added community-based rehabilitation for people with mental illness — extending its original leprosy-care mission into a broader disability and mental-health rehabilitation program serving rural Madhya Pradesh. Ashagram has received government recognition for its rehabilitation work over four decades.
