the giving of clothing
Vastradaanवस्त्रदान
Clothes and warm covering — one of the oldest recorded household charities in India.
Vastradaan is the giving of clothing. It is among the oldest recorded forms of household charity in India, traditionally offered before winter and at festivals, and still one of the most common ways families give.
It is also the form most often done badly. Donated clothing that is torn, unwashed or unsuitable transfers a disposal problem rather than providing help, and organisations receiving it spend scarce time sorting. The organisations that do this well treat cloth as a resource — repairing it, converting it, and pairing it with work rather than handing it out.
