🌾Bhoodaanभूदान

Bhoodaan is the giving of land. Ancient as a practice, it became a national movement in 1951 when Vinoba Bhave began walking from village to village asking landholders to give a share of their holdings to landless families. He covered thousands of miles on foot over the years that followed, and millions of acres were pledged.

The movement's results were mixed — much pledged land was poor quality or tangled in disputes — but its premise remains one of the most radical statements of daan ever attempted in India: that the person with land should hand over part of it because someone else has none.

Its living equivalent is support for landless and marginal farmers, land-rights work, and the restoration of common land and water bodies that rural livelihoods depend on.
