Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan is an Indian actor and producer whose charitable work centres on the Meer Foundation, which supports women who have survived acid attacks, and on a long record of public-health and children's causes carried out with United Nations agencies and the Indian government.

The Meer Foundation was set up on the view that existing efforts concentrated almost entirely on treating survivors after an attack, and that the problem also required changing attitudes, tightening the law and rebuilding lives over the long term. Registered as a not-for-profit company under section 25 of the Companies Act, it funds and works through other institutions rather than delivering services itself, covering medical treatment and reconstructive surgery, legal advice, counselling and vocational training. The foundation states that it does not accept donations from individuals or outside parties.

Separately, Khan sits on the board of the Make-A-Wish Foundation in India and has fronted government health campaigns including Pulse Polio and the work of the National AIDS Control Organisation, recording public service announcements on nutrition and joining a nationwide child immunisation drive run by the health ministry with UNICEF. In 2011 the United Nations Office for Project Services made him the first global ambassador of the Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council, a role concerned with the taboo around sanitation. In 2014 he became an ambassador for Interpol's Turn Back Crime campaign. In April 2020 he announced a set of relief measures with the central government and the governments of Maharashtra, West Bengal and Delhi for daily-wage workers hit by the COVID-19 lockdown, and offered his four-storey personal office in Mumbai to the municipal corporation for use as a quarantine facility.

In 2011 he received UNESCO's Pyramide con Marni award for his support of children's education, the first Indian to be given it.[1][2]
