The Schieffelin Institute of Health - Research and Leprosy Centre (SIH-R&LC) was established at Karigiri near Vellore, Tamil Nadu, in 1955 to care for leprosy patients and to research the disease, with Dr Robert Cochrane as the moving force behind it. Leprosy services were integrated into general health services at the institution in 1997, and since 1998 it has developed into a secondary care centre offering dermatology, orthopaedics, surgery, ophthalmology, paediatrics and other specialities. It runs a college of health sciences and a school of nursing, and has published research since 1955.
