MYRADA began in 1968 resettling Tibetan refugees before shifting, by 1978, to rural development in drought-prone parts of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. It is widely credited as a pioneer of India's self-help group movement, working with the Reserve Bank of India and NABARD to develop the model, and today works with community institutions on livelihoods, natural resource management, health and education.
