Founded in 1978 by a group of nature lovers in Madras, the Madras Naturalists' Society promotes appreciation, education and conservation of nature. It publishes the 'Blackbuck' journal, runs the annual Chennai Bird Race, field trips and nature internships for students, and drives citizen-science projects like the Frog Atlas of Greater Chennai, birding-hotspot documentation and biodiversity conservation at Sirudavoor village, while giving the M. Krishnan Memorial Award for nature writing.
