Janmitram Kalyan Samiti grew out of a conversation between Manish Singh, a Joint Forest Management official, and forestry researcher Dr Mukesh Goswami, who met while working on village-level forest management plans around Raigarh. They formally registered the organisation in October 2002 under the Chhattisgarh Societies Registration Act (Regn. No. 0838), first drawing up micro-level forest and village development plans for local communities. It has since diversified into natural resource management, health and sanitation, education and skill development, women's empowerment, farmland development and non-timber forest produce value chains, working with families across Raigarh district who depend on the surrounding forest for their livelihoods.
