Suparna Baksi Ganguly

CUPA was established in Bangalore in October 1991 by the animal activist Crystal Rogers together with Ganguly and Shiela Rao, who were its founding trustees. The organisation runs several centres that rescue and rehabilitate animals, among them monkeys, snakes and birds, alongside shelter, veterinary and adoption work for domestic animals.

In 1999 Ganguly co-founded the Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre, of which she became honorary president. She has campaigned on the condition of India's captive elephants, of which she has estimated there are about 4,000, arguing that almost all were illegally taken from the wild and that many are used in entertainment. In 2016 the WRRC petitioned the Supreme Court of India seeking a ruling against the keeping of elephants in captivity.

She served on the Government of India's Task Force on Elephants in 2013 and has sat on Karnataka state committees concerned with the welfare of domestic animals and captive elephants.

Ganguly received the Nari Shakti Puraskar, India's highest civilian honour for women, from President Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhavan in March 2016, for her contribution to animal welfare and environmental conservation.[3][4][5]
