Gulabi Gang
The Gulabi Gang is the pink-sari women's movement founded in 2006 by Sampat Pal Devi in Banda district of Uttar Pradesh, after she confronted a man beating his wife and was abused for intervening. From Bundelkhand's deeply patriarchal villages it has grown into a mass movement that confronts domestic violence, dowry harassment, corruption and child marriage, trains women in sustainable livelihoods like sewing, Zardozi and food processing, and now works through the formally registered Gulabi Seva Sansthan in Chitrakoot.
Gulabi Gang reports the following, on its own site:
- Approximately 1.4 million women in iconic pink saris are associated with the movement
