Alok Dixit

Alok Dixit is an Indian activist who came out of journalism into campaigning on acid violence. In 2013 he was among the organisers of Stop Acid Attacks, a campaign that set out to give survivors of acid attacks a public voice at a time when the crime attracted little sustained attention in India. The campaign was the origin of the Chhanv Foundation, which he founded together with a group of mostly young people from journalism and activist backgrounds, and which he serves as counselling director.

The approach he took was to widen what 'rehabilitation' meant for survivors. Rather than treating an attack as a medical problem alone, Chhanv combines advocacy and litigation with medical assistance, legal support, help with education, and — the part that has drawn most attention — paid work. Survivors are employed at the Sheroes Hangout cafés, opened in Agra and later Lucknow, which are run by survivors and function as both livelihood and public statement. The foundation is based in Noida, from where operations and strategy are coordinated.
