Founder

Dr. Anuradha Sharma is the founder of Hamari Kaksha [1], an Indian non-profit working on education and women & children from Chandigarh.

Anuradha Sharma is the founder of Hamari Kaksha, a non-profit organisation in Chandigarh that provides supplementary education to children from poor families and literacy classes to their mothers. She started it in 2003.

According to the organisation's account, she began after her teaching duties at a government college by taking 17 children of domestic workers and daily-wage labourers into her verandah. Many of them had been written off at school as low performers or had dropped out. The organisation now runs three centres in Chandigarh serving more than 400 children aged between five and fifteen.

Hamari Kaksha

Hamari Kaksha teaches for about three hours each evening, with a staff of teachers and teaching assistants, a number of whom are former pupils of the organisation. It also runs literacy classes for around fifty women a year, most of them mothers of the children it teaches.

The organisation takes its slogan from the phrase 'A Class Apart', and describes its staff and volunteers as acting as second parents to the children in its care.

Recognition

Hamari Kaksha's own record of awards includes a commendation certificate from the education department of the Union Territory of Chandigarh in 2008 for work in education for disadvantaged children, the Tara Chand Saboo Award for excellence in the field of education in 2009, a certificate of appreciation from the Chandigarh administration in 2010, the Godfrey Phillips Award for Social Bravery in 2010, the Rotary Club of Chandigarh's Award of Vocational Excellence in 2011, a certificate of commendation from the Governor of Punjab, Shivraj Patil, on Republic Day 2012, and an honour from the Governor of Haryana on 6 March 2013 for selfless service in the field of education.

A documentary film inspired by Hamari Kaksha's work, Therefore I Win, was made by the directors Nabh Kumar and Sandeep Kapur in 2010.[2][3][4][5]
