Biswajit Rai Chaudhuri is the founder of Nature Environment and Wildlife Society (NEWS)[1], an Indian non-profit working on environment and animals from Kolkata.

Biswajit Rai Chaudhuri, whose name is also transliterated as Biswajit Roy Chowdhury, is an Indian conservationist, wildlife photographer and author, and the founder secretary of the Nature Environment and Wildlife Society (NEWS), a Kolkata-based conservation organisation working on ecology, environment, wildlife, sustainable livelihoods and natural resource management.

He edits the wildlife magazine Environ and has written and photographed a number of books on Indian wildlife, with a particular focus on the Sundarbans mangrove forest of West Bengal.

Career

Rai Chaudhuri founded the Nature Environment and Wildlife Society and serves as its founder secretary. The organisation works across West Bengal and the eastern Indian states on wildlife conservation, environmental education and community-based natural resource management, including in the Sundarbans.

He served as a member of the West Bengal State Wildlife Board for thirteen years and is a member of the Indian National Committee of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). He is editor-in-chief of Environ, the society's wildlife magazine.

As an author and wildlife photographer his books include Sundarbans: A Majestic Mangrove, Days in the Wild, Wild Wonders of India, Natural Wonders of Asia, Natural Wonders of India and Nepal, Wildlife of Kolkata, Bharater Banyoprani o Abhayaranya, Bone Bone Berai and Paschim Banglar Pakhi.[2][3][4]

NEWS works to protect vulnerable wildlife and restore habitats across West Bengal, combining scientific research, community-based conservation and policy advocacy to promote sustainable livelihoods alongside ecological protection.
