Sankara's base charitable eye hospital at Pammal, a Chennai suburb, opened in 1997 with the blessings of the Kanchi Sankaracharya and has grown into a tertiary care facility that the group says has benefited over 2.5 million patients. A paying hospital at Nanganallur followed in 2014 and a third hospital at Samarjhola in Odisha in 2016, all built on the conviction that no one with curable eye disease should go untreated for want of money. Outreach camps screen for cataract, diabetic retinopathy and childhood eye problems, backed by an eye bank and an optometry institute.
