Meenakshi Gupta is the founder of Goonj[1], an Indian non-profit working on disaster relief, livelihood and women & children from New Delhi.

Goonj

Goonj channels underutilised urban material, particularly clothing and household goods, into rural India as a resource for community-led development. Communities undertake work like building infrastructure and cleaning water bodies, receiving material as reward rather than charity. Goonj also runs large-scale disaster relief across many Indian states.

Goonj reports the following, on its own site:

  • 72 million kgs of material handled (April 2014 – March 2025)
  • Presence in 31 States / UTs of India
  • Approx. 20 million lives touched
  • 3.5 million quilts and sitting mats made from urban surplus material
