Gaya Prasad Gopal is the founder of Akhil Bharatiya Samaj Sewa Sansthan[1], an Indian non-profit working on tribal welfare, human rights and water & sanitation from Chitrakoot.
Akhil Bharatiya Samaj Sewa Sansthan
Akhil Bharatiya Samaj Sewa Sansthan was founded on 23 March 1978 at Chitrakoot in the Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh by Gaya Prasad Gopal. It works with Kol tribals and Dalits in the Manikpur and Mau blocks on land-title advocacy for families released from bonded labour, soil and water conservation, diversion-based irrigation, primary education centres and women's rights. It received the Fifth FICCI Water Award in 2017.
Akhil Bharatiya Samaj Sewa Sansthan reports the following, on its own site:
- By the end of 1997, 2,500 poor Kol families of Mau and Manikpur had acquired possession of 10,000 acres of land valued at Rs 2 crore (20 million).
- By 1997-98, ABSSS was running 40 primary schools where 2,169 children – 1,279 boys and 890 girls – were enrolled.
- Thereafter, the programme really took off and by 1997 ABSSS had completed construction of 22 wells, 26 chohras and 18 reservoirs in 66 villages.
