Shukla Bose is the founder of Parikrma Humanity Foundation (2003)[1], an Indian non-profit working on education from Bengaluru.
Shukla Bose is an Indian educationist and the founder and chief executive of the Parikrma Humanity Foundation, which she established in Bangalore in 2003. Parikrma runs English-medium schools for children from slums and orphanages in the city, together with a college-going support programme.
Before founding Parikrma she spent about 26 years in the hospitality industry, latterly as a chief executive, and gave up that career to work in education.
Early life and education
Bose was born in Darjeeling, West Bengal, and studied at Loreto College, Kolkata. She began her working life teaching at a convent school in Kolkata and later at an army school in Bhutan.
Career
Bose worked for the Oberoi group and subsequently for Resort Condominiums International, where she was managing director. From 2000 she ran the Indian operations of a multinational children's charity. She has also said that she volunteered with the Missionaries of Charity for seven years.
She founded the Parikrma Humanity Foundation in 2003. Parikrma's schools follow an English-medium curriculum and provide meals, health care and family support alongside teaching, on the argument that children from very poor households cannot be educated in isolation from their circumstances. Bose has served on bodies including the Karnataka Knowledge Commission and the Confederation of Indian Industry's national education committee.
She spoke at TEDIndia in 2009; the talk, published by TED in 2010 as 'Teaching one child at a time', describes Parikrma's early years.
Recognition
Bose received an Entrepreneur of the Year award in 1995, the Bharat Gaurav Award in 1996 and a Woman of the Year award in 2000. She was named a Bangalore Hero in a Bangalore Mirror campaign in 2014 and received the Pride of Karnataka award from Round Table International in 2015, the Qimpro Platinum Standard Award in Education in 2017, and a Woman Achievers Award from FICCI-FLO in 2018.[2][3][4]
