Sanjoy Roy is the founding trustee of Salaam Baalak Trust[1], an Indian non-profit working on women & children and education from New Delhi.
Sanjoy Roy is a founder-trustee of the Salaam Baalak Trust in Delhi and, in his working life, managing director of Teamwork Arts, a production house active in the performing and visual arts, film and television. He read at St Stephen's College, Delhi, and has won National Awards for Best Documentary and Best Director for the film Shahjahanabad.
The Salaam Baalak Trust was established in December 1988, in the wake of Mira Nair's film Salaam Bombay!, which had brought the lives of children on Indian city streets to a wide audience. Roy was among the founding trustees who set up the Delhi organisation to work with street and working children in the National Capital Region, and it now runs residential care, outreach and community projects, mental health and nutrition services, education and vocational training, and programmes to restore children to their families where that is possible. Trustees take no salary or honorarium and attend weekly Saturday meetings on the running of the organisation.
Roy's particular contribution has been to bring his professional world into the charity's programme. It was through his involvement that performing arts and theatre became one of the trust's core components rather than a peripheral activity, giving children a route into training, confidence and, for some, work. The trust was awarded the National Award for Child Welfare by the President of India in 2011.[2][3]
