Ashok Hans is the founder of Shanta Memorial Rehabilitation Centre (1985)[1], an Indian non-profit working on disability, women & children, human rights and disaster relief from Bhubaneswar.
Shanta Memorial Rehabilitation Centre
Shanta Memorial Rehabilitation Centre (SMRC) was set up in Bhubaneswar in 1985 by Ashok Hans as a disabled people's organisation. It runs a transit home and community-based rehabilitation services, and works on the rights of women with disabilities and on disability-inclusive disaster risk reduction. SMRC holds Special Consultative Status with the UN Economic and Social Council and publishes annual AGM and financial reports.
Shanta Memorial Rehabilitation Centre reports the following, on its own site:
- SMRC rehabilitated 335 severely disabled people in its transit home during 2015-16.
- SMRC trained 111 carers and personal attendants during the 2015-16 year.
- SMRC's outdoor therapy services covered 255 people who underwent approximately 4,388 sessions during the 2015-16 year.
