Founder of Vikramshila Education Resource Society

Shubhra Chatterji is the founder of Vikramshila Education Resource Society[1], an Indian non-profit working on education from Kolkata.

Vikramshila Education Resource Society

Vikramshila Education Resource Society was founded in Kolkata in 1989 and has spent over three decades working on foundational literacy, numeracy and early-childhood education, framing its mission around child rights rather than test scores alone. It designs curricula, learning materials and teacher-training programs, then works through government-school systems and field offices to deliver them, with a footprint that now extends beyond West Bengal into Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Assam, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and Tripura. Vikramshila positions itself as a resource organisation as much as a direct-delivery one — developing pedagogy and materials that partner schools, governments and other NGOs can adopt, aiming for children to become confident, resilient learners rather than only literate ones.

Vikramshila Education Resource Society reports the following, on its own site:

  • In 2024-25, with a team of 176 across 20 projects, Vikramshila reached over 7 lakh children (directly and indirectly), 5,000+ teachers, 2,000+ frontline workers and 35,000+ caregivers across 11 states
