Rukmini Devi Arundale is the founder of Kalakshetra Foundation (1936)[1], an Indian non-profit working on arts & culture and education from Chennai.
Kalakshetra Foundation
Kalakshetra Foundation was founded by Rukmini Devi Arundale as a centre for the preservation and teaching of Bharatanatyam dance, Carnatic music and traditional crafts, and today runs a degree college, two schools and a craft centre on a 100-acre campus in Chennai, recognised by India's Ministry of Culture.
Kalakshetra Foundation reports the following, on its own site:
- The Besant Arundale Senior Secondary School was founded by Rukmini Devi in 1973. With a strength of about 500, the school has a Montessori environment for ages 2 1/2 to 5 1/2 years and CBSE system for classes I-XII.
- Extensive playing fields, bright airy classroom blocks and a dedicated staff impart education to nearly 800 children, who may be seen every morning in their purple and yellow traditional davanis and white kurta pyjamas.
