Founder of Utthan

Nafisa Barot is the founder-member of Utthan (1981)[1], an Indian non-profit working on water & sanitation, women & children, rural & agriculture and livelihood from Ahmedabad.

Utthan

Utthan began in 1981 when four women started working in the Bhal region of Gujarat, helping marginalised communities self-organise around livelihood issues and build local leadership. It works on drinking-water security, sanitation, sustainable agriculture, natural resource management and disaster response, and helped form the community-based organisation Mahiti in 1994.

Utthan reports the following, on its own site:

  • 120,000 households have been provided with clean drinking water through Utthan's water and sanitation work in Gujarat
  • 12,200 women farmers have adopted sustainable farming practices with Utthan's support
  • Gram Panchayat Development Plans worth INR 46 crore were submitted by communities Utthan supported between 2022 and 2024
