Bhartiya Gramotthan Sanstha was founded on 23 December 1989 by the late Prakash Mohan Chandola, a recipient of Uttarakhand's Shilp Ratna award, and operates from Dhalwala near Rishikesh. Starting with just two handlooms, it has organised more than 3,000 hill women into self-help groups producing handicrafts from wool and natural fibres, alongside three decades of work on poverty relief, education, health and environmental protection in Uttarakhand's remote hill areas.
