About Daan.org
Daan.org is a free, independent directory of 2,050 verified Indian NGOs, covering 400 cities across 36 states and union territories. You can use it to find an organisation worth supporting, volunteer near where you live, answer a blood request, or pledge to donate organs.
What we check before listing an NGO
Anyone can compile a list of charities. What takes work is confirming each one is real and still operating, so every entry goes through the same checks:
- The website is genuinely theirs. Charity domains lapse and get bought. We have found dozens of former NGO addresses now quietly serving gambling and counterfeit content, and they are permanently blocked from the site by an automated check that runs before every release.
- Impact figures come from the organisation itself.Numbers are copied from an NGO's own website or published reports, and the source link is shown next to the figure. If a claim cannot be found on their own pages, we leave it out rather than repeat it.
- Press coverage is read, not searched. Each article is fetched from the publication and checked to confirm it names that organisation in the body — not a similarly named one in another city.
Where we cannot verify something, the page says so plainly instead of filling the space.
How it is funded
Listing is free for NGOs, and we do not take a percentage of donations. Where an organisation accepts donations we point people to that organisation's own channel rather than collecting money on their behalf.
What Daan.org is not
Daan (दान) is the Sanskrit word for giving, so several unrelated organisations share the name. To be clear: Daan.org is not connected to Daan Utsav, the annual giving festival; to DHAN Foundation, the development organisation in Madurai; or to any other body using the word. We are not a government scheme, not a religious organisation, and not affiliated with any political party.
If you want the meaning of the word itself, we wrote about that separately: what daan means and the forms it takes.
Questions people ask
- What is Daan.org?
- Daan.org is a free, independent directory of 2,050 verified Indian NGOs across 400 cities. It lets people find a charity to support, volunteer with an organisation near them, respond to blood requests, and pledge organ donation. Every organisation is checked by hand before it is listed.
- Who runs Daan.org?
- Daan.org is an independent platform. It is not a government body, not a fundraising intermediary, and not affiliated with any single NGO, religious organisation or political party.
- Does Daan.org take a cut of donations?
- No. Listing is free for NGOs and we do not take a percentage of money given. Where an organisation accepts donations, we point people to that organisation's own channel rather than collecting on their behalf.
- How does Daan.org verify an NGO?
- Before an organisation is listed we confirm it has a working website that it genuinely owns, obtain its real logo, and check the site is not a lapsed domain taken over by someone else. Impact figures are copied only from the organisation's own website or published reports, with the source recorded. Press coverage is fetched from the publication and checked to confirm the article names that organisation in its body. 2,785 articles covering 1,652 organisations have been verified this way.
- Is Daan.org the same as Daan Utsav or DHAN Foundation?
- No. Daan Utsav is an annual giving festival in India, and DHAN Foundation is a development organisation based in Madurai. Neither is connected to Daan.org. The word daan (दान) simply means giving in Sanskrit, and several unrelated organisations use it in their names.
